Philip Roth, one of the most celebrated American writers of the 20th century, died this week aged 85. His books are not easy reads and will only be of interest to senior students, who should be interested by Roth’s alternate version of American history in The plot against America: In 1940 Charles A. Lindbergh, heroic aviator and rabid isolationist, is elected President. Shortly thereafter, he negotiates a cordial “understanding” with Adolf Hitler, while the new government embarks on a program of folksy anti-Semitism.
